English delftware pottery plate with image of a cockerel antique period early 18th century London
Reference: 6926
Dated: c. 1725 London England
An exceptionally rare London delftware pottery plate decorated with a vibrant image of a rooster standing on a green ground and surrounded by abstract painted foliage. The style of decoration is very distinctive and confidently applied in a naive fashion, an early piece of "outsider art" on ceramic.
The glaze is a soft egg shell blue. Fragments of the dishes type have been excavated in London and are now located at the V and A museum London England. A very fine example of English delftware with the provenance of the Longridge Collection. This dish works well decoratively with a similar piece in our stock.
